15 Years and a Few Questions

The not-so-distant early 2000’s saw some notable moments in time; Britney Spears was the reigning pop princess, the last ever season finale of Friends was aired, Napoleon Dynamite earned a cult following and, in 2004 Greg, Sue and John commenced their employment at Dee Why RSL.

As Greg, John and Sue recently celebrated fifteen years of employment, we took a moment to explore their journey here.

Congratulations on 15 years service!

Greg Costello
Facilities Co-ordinator

What was your role when you first started?

When I first joined the Club 15 years ago I came in as a licensed plumber as part of the Facilities Team. It was my responsibility to uphold the Club’s kitchens as well as the overall general maintenance.

How have you seen the Club change over the last 15 years?

The Club has more than doubled in size with both members, staff numbers and its facilities. It has been wonderful to help contribute to the progression and expansion over the years. The Facilities Team itself was a Team of three when I first started, now it has eight tradesmen.

In your time off, where would we find you?

On the golf course or spending quality time with my two grandchildren, Brayden and Charlii.

What is your go-to flavour of ice cream?

That’s a tough one! Being a sweet-tooth man I love most ice cream but will never say no to a tangy lemon or creamy rocky road – they’d have to be my favourites.

What are you most looking forward to with the redevelopment?

The finish! Like so many, I can’t wait to see the end result and my expectations are high. I have seen the Club go through a number of redevelopments but none have been as exciting as this.

John Hanlon
Strongroom Controller

What was your role when you first started?

With a background working in finance at St. George Bank, I came straight into the Strongroom. My role in Strongroom career has remained the same, but as the Club grows, with it, so has my list of responsibilities – it’s a very busy role!

How have you seen the Club change over the last 15 years?

There has been huge growth within the Club over the last 15 years; from what was ‘Reef Bar’ on level 3, to the main entrance on Pittwater Road and even the old Sports Bar. I used to visit Dee Why RSL before I was employed here and the Club was relatively small, now it’s one of the biggest and best on the Northern Beaches.

In your time off, where would we find you?

My marriage to my beautiful bride is coming up very quickly so lately I have been focusing on saving for that. I live a pretty simple life anyway and in my spare time, enjoy doing laps of the pool at Manly Aquatic Centre, going for walks around Dee Why or getting a coffee from one of our many local cafés.

What is your go-to flavour of ice cream?

I like to consider myself as a bit of an ice-cream snob. I really enjoy a good quality vanilla bean ice cream. Another ultimate favourite is the mango ice-cream from Chill Bar at Dee Why – delicious!

What are you most looking forward to with the redevelopment?

The whole aspect of the redevelopment is exciting. I am really looking forward to seeing Battery House, our new sports bar. Watching great sport live on the big screens in what will be the best sports bar in the Northern Beaches is quite exciting in itself.

Sue Birtwistle
Gaming Attendant

What was your role when you first started?

I was first employed as an Attendant in the Gaming Room and have been part of the wonderful Gaming Team ever since. When I started, the Gaming Room was quite different – back then, people were able to smoke in the Gaming Room!

How have you seen the Club change over the last 15 years?

The Club has undergone a number of changes over the years. The Gaming Room used to have a small and central round bar, there was no Flame Restaurant, no Cabanas and there used to be an area called Scores Bar (now Admin Offices) with pool tables, so I would say a lot has changed!

In your time off, where would we find you?

I do a lot of scrapbooking and go travelling when I can with a group of eight girlfriends who also enjoy scrapbooking.

Spending time with my five children and three grandkids is also something I love to do in my time off.

What is your go-to flavour of ice cream?

Hokey Pokey ice-cream or anything covered in caramel!

What are you most looking forward to with the redevelopment?

Seeing the finished project and all the new incredible restaurants. I can’t wait!
