Congratulations on 10 years Sheila.

Sheila Zakhar-Malone is the driving force behind our community initiatives, bringing passion and dedication to her role as Executive Manager Communities. During her 10 years at DYRSL, she has built lasting relationships with local organisations, Oceangrove residents and members, ensuring our community thrives.

From guiding retirees in their move to Oceangrove to overseeing support for more than 75 community groups, Sheila’s impact is far-reaching. Her commitment to making a difference is at the heart of everything she does.

We sat down with Sheila to learn more about her journey and what makes her such an invaluable part of the DYRSL team. Read on to discover more!

What do you enjoy about working at DYRSL?

That’s easy – the people. From the salt-of-the-earth volunteers who work so hard for local community organisations, to our dedicated and considerate staff and Board, to our extended families of Oceangrove Residents and DYRSL members.

What is something exciting happening in your life right now?

As a mum, I’m blessed with three wonderful kids, and I’m proud of each of them. However, I’m especially excited for one of my sons, who has recently moved to the USA on a college rugby scholarship to pursue his dreams.

Describe ‘a day in the life’ working at DYRSL in your current position.

Of course, no two days are the same, but a day in the life in overseeing our communities focuses on continuous communication and engagement with over 75 supported community organisations, as part of our long-established DY Foundation Support Program. This might involve offering advice or assistance with the grant program, sharing their inspiring stories, or attending events and meetings hosted by these organisations.

Additionally, my role encompasses working closely with our incredible team and the residents at Oceangrove, our Senior’s Living Village located next door. Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding retirees through the decision to downsize and move to our beautiful village, building lasting relationships along the way that I truly value.

What is a fond/funny/stand-out memory of your time here.

I can’t single out one – but my fondest memories all surround the lasting relationships that have been built with staff and Oceangrove Residents.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

If I could travel anywhere in the world right now, I’d choose Greece. I went as a backpacker on a tight budget when I was young, but this time I’d really slow down to enjoy it. I’m drawn to its fresh Mediterranean cuisine —the seafood and locally grown fruits and vegetables. I also love the idea of exploring the charming streets on foot, wandering through picturesque villages. The Aegean Sea is perfect for swimming, and there’s nothing like watching the sun sets with a cocktail in hand.

What is the weirdest fact you know?

I guess many people know this already, but I am fascinated by the fact that people’s ears and noses apparently continue to grow right throughout their lives…needless to say I’m keeping a watchful eye on mine…!

How would your friends describe you?

I’m pretty sure my friends would describe me as hardworking and dedicated to getting things done. They’d also say that I love social occasions with music, good food and wine (and the odd cocktail). I think they’d say that I’m adaptable when needed, but also a bit stubborn when it comes to my expectations. Ultimately, I hope they’d say that they value my friendship.

Favourite book / movie?

I rarely watch a movie more than once, but I admit that I watch ‘Scarface’ every time it’s on.

Favourite Drink?

Can’t decide between a dirty martini or a good G&T… I assume that you mean alcoholic, right?!

Tell us something we don’t know about you…

I love renovating! I was the owner-builder on a heritage-listed home we once owned, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of transforming it into a modern, comfortable family home, all while working with a heritage consultant to preserve the timeless hallmarks of its Federation Bungalow era.

What is your go-to meal here?

Buddha Bowl in Battery House!

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy home decorating and cooking – I’m not sure if they’re really considered hobbies, but more ongoing necessities.

What are some of your personal goals this year?

To continue to educate myself on what’s best for my overall health, as well as improve my strength and fitness levels.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?

A journalist. And a singer.

If you were to give your younger self some advice, what would it be?

Stop being afraid of failure and of what other people think, and do it anyway!

What do you love doing the most in your work?

What I love most about my work is the immense satisfaction of making a positive impact – however small. My role is particularly rewarding because I have the privilege of working closely with our DYRSL Board to facilitate funding for local organisations that in turn support those in need. Additionally, it’s incredibly fulfilling to see Oceangrove residents come to the realisation that they’ve made the right choice in moving to the Village—often expressing that they wish they’d made the move sooner.

Who is your hero?

My mum. She was a trailblazer with a very successful career in the computer software industry before retiring. Then she got bored and went back to university, studying to becoming a property conveyancer at age 60! She’s brave, quietly resilient, well-read, intelligent and all the while, supportive.

Do you collect anything / have any strange hobbies?

Does the unintended accumulation of things count? If a stranger walked into my house, they’d say that I collect shoes… and recycled gift bags! Oh, and random pieces of fitness equipment (with the best intentions to use them!)
