Cheers to Celebrating 5 Years Blake.

Whether it’s at Reception, in the Gaming Room or delivering the fun and games to our members and guests, if you’ve visited DYRSL over the last 5 years, chances are you’ve seen Blake’s convivial face.

Always maintaining a friendly and welcoming environment to our customers, as Blake celebrates his 5 year anniversary with us, we thought it fitting to catch up with him over a handful of questions.

Read on to find out a little more about Blake and his time with us.

What in particular do you enjoy about working at DYRSL?

The environment. DYRSL is a home away from home, a place where all are welcome, and there truly is something for everyone. Being able to contribute to that atmosphere and commit myself to providing that experience to others, just as DYRSL does for me, is what I’m most passionate about in my various roles here at DYRSL.

Describe ‘a day in the life’ working at DYRSL in your current position.

Whether it’s Reception, Promotions or Gaming, every day here at DYRSL is different. From fresh faces to the most familiar of friends, working here at DYRSL is all about the atmosphere. Each and every day is like meeting your extended family for a friendly catch up, and thus, maintaining the friendly, welcoming environment of this well-established safe haven has become my core motivation for working here at DYRSL.

How has DYRSL changed over your 5 years?

With multiple renovations, including the Battery House addition and the reinvigoration of Flame and the attached Courtyard, during my tenure DYRSL has quickly accelerated from a regular, large scale RSL, to a welcoming environment for each and every patron. While many of the faces have stayed the same, DYRSL never stops evolving to meet the growing needs of the community, and nothing has been more representative of this than our recent additions and renovations, harbouring a whole new crew, and a fresh atmosphere for the vibrant younger crowd.

What is a fond/funny/stand-out memory of your time here?

Over five years it’s almost impossible to pick a specific memory. I think my fondest recollection of my time spent here has been the friends I’ve made along the way. Sometimes it’s less about the destination, the true measure of this experience has been the journey.

What is something exciting happening in your life right now?

The most exciting experiences of my life currently would definitively be related to my current studies of Contemporary Performance at the Australian Institute of Music. Being able to pursue a career dedicated to your greatest passion in life is a gift reserved for a handful of people, and I’m so grateful to be one of those lucky few.

What do you love doing the most in your work?

I love making people smile. Sometimes it’s just the latte art on a coffee, or a good luck in bingo, but nothing is more rewarding than contributing to the happiness of another person, and DYRSL is the perfect environment to help as many people as possible.

How would your friends describe you?

Cheeky, funny, intelligent, full of contagious laughter and ridiculous facts, calm, open, approachable, supportive, and maybe just a little annoying!

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

I would most definitely want to be able to fly.

What is the weirdest fact you know?

An octopus actually has three hearts and independent brain cells in all eight legs!

Tell us something we don’t know about you…

During my seven years of primary school I attended my dad’s school, then my mum’s, and then my grandpa’s, what a crazy world we live in.

What is your favourite book/movie?

The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings.

What is your favourite drink?

Sailor Jerrys and Dry.

What is your go-to meal here?

Stir-fry BBQ duck noodles from Tastes of Asia.

Hobbies outside of work?

Besides following my musical pursuits I love heading down to the beach and enjoying the sun on my face and the sand between my toes. I’ve been a keen swimmer most of my life, but I’m also more than happy to enjoy a coffee with a friend and an ocean view.

Personal goals for this year?

I’m someone that always strives for my personal best in everything that I do, maybe a perfectionist even. But, I think my standalone goal for this year has been a focused redirection of my attention and time into the most important things in life. As my youth gives way to adulthood every second of everyday becomes important, and this year especially I’ve dedicated myself.

As a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

Either a professional baseball player, or a high school English/History teacher. Funnily enough I’ve shot for the stars and decided on rock-star!

If you were to give your younger self some advice what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because in time, the lessons you learn will make you into the man you’ve always wanted to be.
